The compositions in this concert programme date from a time of political, philosophical and religious upheaval in Europe.
While both the sacred vocal works and the secular instrumental pieces reflect the tensions between Catholic and Protestant thinking in the early Baroque period, this also led to a creative competition between the arts that was immensely beneficial to musical development after the end of the 30 Years War.
